Story
Martyn was always wanting to put back into the community and make people happy, so the family have chosen this charity on behalf of Martyn, as one that has a Skipton community focus and was close to his heart.
When Skipton Step into Action (SSIA) formed in response to the pandemic, to help the more vulnerable and elderly in our community, Martyn used this as an opportunity to bring joy to others through music.
He started his “Desert Island Disc Show” and volunteered his gift of song. He would get dressed up in a suit and rain or shine, he would be pitched up on the lawn singing to the care home residents through their open windows.
This not only made others happy, but Martyn soaked in the joy from others like a sponge. He went on from this to start up his own entertainment business which flourished before he got too sick.
SSIA continues to offer services that help not only the elderly and vulnerable, but the wider community that are in need, including those suffering from poor mental health like Martyn. Along with many other community based projects, the Skipton Wellbeing Hub and Cafe, offers a drop in for those in need to go for a brew and all important company and support. This is such a necessary offering for so many and needs to continue to be available.
The cafe is especially important for those who are feeling isolated, lonely, or experiencing difficult times in their lives.
Mental heath can affect anyone, at any time.
