Richard's World Record Marathon Attempt in Support of Back Up

Richard Cartwright is raising money for Back Up

World Record Ski Erg Marathon Attempt (Sit 3 Classification) · 24 September 2025

Back Up services include mentoring, wheelchair skills training and activity courses as well as support in getting back to work or school after an injury. We provide peer led tailored support to help people adjust to a spinal cord injury and inspire independence and confidence for a positive future.

Story

I’m taking on a world record attempt to be the first person to set a marathon time on a Concept2 SkiErg in the Sit 3 category. The challenge will take place at Places Leisure Camberley as part of National Fitness Day, helping to showcase their inclusive memberships and the message that it’s never too late to start exercising.

I’m raising funds for Back Up Trust, a charity that has transformed the lives of so many people with spinal cord injuries – myself included. Every donation will help them continue their vital work.

UPDATE:

I’m really pleased to say I completed the marathon on maximum resistance, without a break in just under 5 hours and 50 minutes.

Thank you to the team who organised a really amazing event and the staff and members of the public who helped me along the way.

Finally a HUGE thank you for all of your donations. Back Up is an amazing Charity changing lives every day.
