Story
I have now successfully completed a challenging 994 mile cycle tour from Lands End to John o' Groats.
A 10 day ride, back to back with over 65,000 feet of climbing, averaging 99 miles per day. The weather was on my side 90% of the time, providing in the main, a mild and precipitation free ride, with a gentle breeze on my back. This was particularly helpful, especially when I cycled up Glen Shee one of Scotlands two ski resorts I crossed.
LEJOG had been a long term ambition of mine, one that I thought would be wonderful to achieve in my 60th year. So I thought "why not'! It cant be that difficult, can it? Well, it proved to be far more difficult than I had anticipated furthermore, trained for!
Given the level of challenge, I felt I should raise funds for a worthy cause, one with a personal family connection. I therfore nominated a most apt charity:...PSC Support.
I self funding the challenge, meaning 100% of the sponsorship raised, goes directly to PSC Support.
This family connection, is very close to my heart. Kindly read on, for the touching back story, before considering a donation, which would be truly appreciated. The funds raised upto and during my tour, really did help me pull through a number of very challenging days; particularly day 10, the last day where around 50 miles of the 82, I limped along with serious pains in my right knee.
Olivia, one of my step daughters, fiancé Ben, was diagnosed with Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis (PSC) in 2019, having already suffered from Ulcerative Colitis since he was 15 years old.
PSC is a rare, chronic autoimmune disease that affects the liver and bile duct. While the condition is currently incurable, there are a number of exciting therapeutic treatments and clinical trials currently being explored.
The effects of PSC are often invisible. While Ben may sometimes appear healthy, he experiences periods of fatigue, stomach pain, jaundice, and itchiness. Despite these challenges, he maintains a healthy lifestyle, fast-paced job, enjoys travelling with Olivia and is a keen exercise enthusiast.
PSC Support, is a fantastic charity that provides hope and funds research for patients, families, and loved ones. PSC Support's #Mission30 strategy aims to find a cure for the disease by 2030 through dedicated research. In 2024, Ben raised £3,700 by running the London Marathon, which funded a number of research grants and clinical trials. Having seen first hand, how donations are utilised, I wanted to do my little bit, in hope thats Ben and others like him, benifit from the research and support.
Thank you. #LetsBeatPSC
