Richard's participation in FUM Summer 15 mile walk

Richard Pratt is raising money for Friends of Urambo & Mwanhala (FUM)

15 mile walk · 19 September 2026

For over 50 years FUM has sought to advance the Education and Health facilities of the people in Nzega, Urambo, Kaliua and Sikonge Districts of Tabora Region in Tanzania. A major emphasis is on improving Health by helping to provide a reliable supply of safe, good quality drinking water in the rural villages.

Story

I am walking with others to raise funds to provide a decent staff house for nurses at the Maboha clinic in the Tabora region of Tanzania. The Friends of Urambo and Mwanhala have successfully raised funds for new and refurbished maternity units in the past but they cannot operate without staff. Because the maternity units are in remote parts of Tanzania, the staff must live locally. The current Maboha staff house is in a terrible condition and the nurses urgently need appropriate accommodation.

The Friends of Urambo and Mwanhala have been supporting the people of the Tabora region of Tanzania for over 60 years. We support health clinics and vocational colleges on a regular basis, support students and build facilities. In the past decade or so, we have been ensuring adequate water supplies to the clinics and Colleges we support, while continuing to build new maternity units and dispensaries.

Last year, we raised funds to build a new Maternity Unit in Uhindi, in the Kaliua District. Work on this is about to start. It will provide a delivery room and beds for mothers for before and after giving birth. With 25 deliveries a week, this facility is sorely needed. Especially since it is 60km to Kaliua hospital. This facility is similar to that in Mwasala, which we built last year with funds raised from previous walks and is pictured here.
