Story
I am running the London marathon this year with Anoosheh Ashoori, who returned from Evin Prison in Iran with Nazanin in 2022, and inspired me that if he could get fit running barefoot in a prison yard to do a marathon at the age of 71 - then so could I.
I will be running to raise money for Amnesty UK for two reasons:
First, to remember those who are still held. There are still innocent Brits being held hostage in Iran, there are other UK nationals still unfairly imprisoned, sometimes subject to torture, in many other countries. Amnesty UK continues to work with many of their families. Our happy ending does not mean that they are forgotten.
Second, to acknowledge and celebrate the kindness of strangers - all the support and care our family received from Amnesty supporters and others up and down the country during our darkest years, and who kept the colour and light alive when all seemed grey.
Anoosheh and I will be running wearing part of the "chain of care" - some 1,500 woollen links one for each day Nazanin was held (at the time), knitted together by Amnesty Cardiff, which accompanied our families to various protests in front of the Iranian Embassy, and Foreign Office and Parliaments, and has joined the protests of other families since. It came to represent the ongoing links of care that held onto us beyond the prison walls, and kept us believing in a different world.
That kindness, that belief got Nazanin home. During the campaign we never really knew what worked, which action made the most difference. Often it felt like a drop in the ocean, only sometimes we realised the ocean was greater. But it made a real difference after - for Nazanin to realise alongside the cruelty, the kindness was always there.
After, we never really got to pay it back - you can't with something of that scale - but we do sometimes get to pay it forward. That is why I run, so that others may have their happy ending too, and those who support realise why their actions matter all the more in a darkening world.
Amnesty International is a movement of ordinary people from across the world standing up for humanity and human rights. When injustice happens to one person, it happens to us all.
