Richard's fundraiser for Macmillan Cancer Support

London Marathon 2025 · 27 April 2025 ·
Hiya, so I don’t know what possessed me to think that as a lazy person that would drive to the end of the road. I’ve only told a handful of people to date so for most this will be such a shock.
Well I do know what possessed me and it was to try and give something back to a great cause. Never in a million years did I think that I would be successful in getting a place to run the London Marathon.
After we lost my grandma in March last year & watching the marathon in April, which she loved watching, I thought I would enter the ballot and also apply to run on behalf of Macmillan. I didn’t get a place in the ballot but just over a month later, I found out that from my 1 in 30 chance application to Macmillan, I got in!
Macmillan were absolutely fantastic following my grandmas diagnosis with cancer in 2023 & their palliative care for both of my grandmas. I therefore wanted to try and give them something back.
So here we are and I am running the London Marathon on Sunday, 27th April 2025 (if you want to come and cheer me on!) My Grandma Kate was such a huge part of my life and she would definitely think I am mental for signing up to take part.
The furthest I had run before was 10k for the last time in 2015 including walking stints. Going from just over 6 miles (10 years ago) to 26.2 miles is a bit of a difference though. I have so far been out in all climates on the roads of DN2 including 60mph winds, snow & ice!
I have been regularly smashing my PB’s with the 5k and 10k’s but that isn’t 26.2 miles though is it. My first run was absolutely awful & I wondered what I had signed up for and that was only 2 miles!
I am nearly up to a half marathon without walking but 5 weeks into my 18 week training plan at the time of writing this. I’m not looking for a specific completion time but just to actually run the full length.
So here I am with my online fundraising page. In order for me to run for Macmillan, I have to raise a minimum of £2,500, however, I have a personal target of raising £3,930. A random amount but that is £150 for each mile completed (26.2 in total!!).
Thank you for taking the time to read my reasons why and I will update my page regularly to show my training progress as I am taking a photo at the end of each run of my training with the number of run that it is.
If you do donate, thank you so much in advance and I’ll be thinking of everyone when I am being challenged on the day.
