We Raise funds for Leprosy to Eradicate leprosy from Nigeria

Story

Thank you for supporting the cycle for Leprosy Outreach!

The charity is a small one - for which I became a trustee in 2022 - that was set up by Margaret, a family friend, with the aim of eliminating leprosy in Nigeria.

Despite the infection having been largely wiped out across Europe, there are still some pockets of the world where it remains an issue. The infection is now curable with multidrug therapy but it is expensive for these areas to fund and maintain due to the poverty that is often found hand in hand with those who are impacted with the infection.

As a result, Margaret has been working with colonies in her native Nigeria, having grown up seeing the ravages of the condition first hand, to help support them with their living conditions and to provide medicine to help cure those suffering from leprosy.

Every pound that we raise will go a long way to helping the charity with their aims and, alongside this, BB&R will be fund matching the efforts!

Growing up in Nigeria, Margaret Eniola saw the ravages of leprosy first hand. As a girl, she passed by leprosy sufferers on her way to school, as they stood along the side of the highway, begging for money and help. As a lone girl staring into the face of the entrenched indifference of an ineffective system, there was little she could do. She tried anyway: sharing her pocket money and making a weekly Saturday afternoon visit to take snacks and treats to sufferers in a local home for the disabled. Even as she grew up, left Nigeria for the UK, and launched herself into a successful career as a social worker, the leprosy sufferers of her childhood were never far from her mind. Which is why, in 2012, she decided to quit her job and found Leprosy Outreach, a very small charity with a grand ambition: to eliminate leprosy in Nigeria. please donate to this worthy cause
