Story

Richard – Why I’m Walking

Richard is taking on an extraordinary challenge in November 2026, trekking 100km across the Sahara Desert in support of PAPYRUS, the UK charity dedicated to preventing young suicide.

He is walking in memory of Darcy, the much-loved daughter of close friends, who tragically died by suicide at just 17.

He will also carry the memory of a dear friend whose brother died by suicide in his mid-twenties, and the loss of another close friend’s father. Each of these lives mattered deeply, and each loss has left a lasting impact on those who loved them.

Too many families are affected by suicide, and too many young people continue to struggle in silence.

PAPYRUS works tirelessly to provide support, reassurance, and a lifeline to young people who feel overwhelmed and alone, reminding them that they are not a burden and that help is available.

By pushing himself physically and mentally across one of the world’s harshest environments, Richard hopes to raise vital funds and awareness so that more young people can be supported and fewer families have to experience the pain of losing someone they love.

This trek is for those we have lost too soon.

And it is for every young person who deserves to feel heard, supported, and valued.

Thank you for supporting Team Darcy on this challenge and for helping PAPYRUS continue its life-saving work.

“If this walk helps ensure a young person gets the support they need when it matters most, then every step across the desert will be worth it.”
