Story
Having previously worked as a carer, I witnessed how cruel this disease can be. I naïvely never thought that I would have to face this disease in my family but unfortunately that isn’t the case.
Over the course of a few years, the subtle signs crept in as my gran started to forget the simple things, which then turned into much more. This amazing women who, all her life, has ensured that she’s done everything for everyone, never forgot anyones birthday, running bowling competitions, hosting huge family Boxing Day parties and all round day to day caring for everyone and anyone. My gran had made the biggest impact on my life, as a woman who truly has a heart of gold & is the centre of us all. The memories she made with our family, which she has started to forget. However, even in the moments where she knows she’s forgotten something, she still manages to be polite, smile and pretend like she does remember. She’s the strongest woman I’ve known.I’m doing this greater Manchester run to raise money for this terrible disease which essentially takes away someone’s life & identify, whilst they’re still living.
On behalf of my gran who is no longer with us after slowly losing herself to this disease, for my grandad who had been amazing in doing everything he could to take care of her, and my family who witnessed the cruel disease
. Alzheimer’s Society is transforming the landscape of dementia forever. Until the day we find a cure, we will create a society where those affected by dementia are supported & hopefully one day live in a future where this disease can be prevented or cured.
