Raising awareness for Mental Health

Having had a few events take place in my own personal life in the last year or so, events which hit me at once in a time of high stress, I suffered with depression which triggered an insomnia. I was fortunate enough to have many people to lean on when I needed them as well as therapy to help.
Fitness has always been a huge part of my life, from losing weight via boxing when I was younger to competing for Loughborough Athletic Union in Powerlifting; hiking and exploring the outdoors has developed into a huge passion of mine – it was always an empowering experience that provided me with great mental clarity and in this way I was able to unlock the mindset that I am grateful to tackle life with now.
On the day of the Edinburgh Marathon 2023, I had ascended Ben Nevis via the Carn Mor Dearg route and headed to Edinburgh to recuperate. On this night, I came across someone who was going through a difficult time – I sat him down and I quickly learned his friend had ran the marathon, raised a huge amount of money, but despite this he was suffering dearly with his mental health; the conversation we had really highlighted to me the positive impact that a random chat with a stranger in the Meadows at 12:30 can have as well as the importance of being able to express your emotions. This experience planted a seed in my head.
Fast forward a few months, I am physically challenging myself to complete this marathon in a good time so that I can raise awareness for Mental Health, I believe it is a topic which is often neglected and unfortunately met with stigma, especially for men. My own experiences and conversations have really made me believe in the power of a single conversation and I want to help communities build awareness so that we can all become more emotionally intelligent and better equipped to understand mental health together.
