Story
If you had asked me a few years ago about my liver - I doubt I could have picked it out of a line up! Asked to locate it, "Somewhere in the middle" would likely have been my reply. We hear so much about the heart, lungs and brain, that the poor old liver rarely gets a look in. Unfortunately, in recent years this vital organ has come to the front and center of my thinking.
Firstly, I was diagnosed over lockdown by the excellent NHS with non-alcoholic steatohepatitis, a form of liver disease that is hopefully reversible. Secondly, my close friend and father in law, Max Fawcett, passed away on New Years Eve, with his liver being a contributing factor.
Max was a very keen walker, and was never happier than when he was pulling on his boots (or meticulously cleaning them afterwards!), planning the route or diving deep into an OS map.
This makes the Thames Bridges Trek such an obvious choice for me - 25km, 16 bridges - zigzagging my way across London in September to raise money for the amazing British Liver Trust, in memory of Max and with the exercise helping my own liver!
