Story
PAPYRUS is the national charity for the Prevention of Young Suicide.
Suicide is the biggest killer of young people under the age of 35 in the UK, every year over 1800 young people take their own lives. PAPYRUS provides confidential support and advice to young people struggling with thoughts of suicide, and anyone worried about a young person through their helpline, HOPELINE247.
My own father, Neville, took his own life in June 1956 at the age of 33, just before my third birthday, with a devasting impact on my mother, his parents and my own life. The tragedy of suicide has also impacted on a number of people we know. For these reasons, as Mayor of the Loyal and Ancient Borough of Newcastle-under-Lyme, I am raising money for Papyrus. I will be walking, in 10 stages, round the boundary (85 miles) of the Borough, The walk is called 'One Mayor Meandering'. All the money raised from 'One Mayor Meandering' will go to Papyrus; so I can help them save others."
There are many reasons to walk the boundary of the Borough for Papyrus and some of these have been entered on my Just Giving pages by those who have kindly donated. The one in black and white is a picture of me with my father in happier times. The seat under the tree is on the Isle of Wight, in memory of a friend's son.
Every £15 raised can contribute towards a life-saving contact to HOPELINE247. Your donations really are changing lives, thank you.
YOU KEEP SMASHING MY TARGET.....WOW....!!!!! You have helped me well exceed the original target, which we then raised. There is now just one fantastic target in our sights! SEE BELOW!
i HAVE ADJUSTED THE TARGET TO £3,250 based on 50p per mile of the 65 mile Borough Boundary.
Currently, the page will remain active until the day after my Mayor's Ball (Sunday 22 March).
