West Highland Way in Three Days 2026 for Barking Mad Dog Rescue

Robert Wallace is raising money for Barking Mad Dog Rescue

West Highland Way in Three Days · 3 July 2026

Barking Mad Dog Rescue is a UK based charity set up to provide food, veterinary support and care for abandoned dogs in Romania before finding them suitable homes. With several hundred dogs to feed on a daily basis and dogs needing veterinary attention, fundraising is ongoing and essential.

Story

I’m going to hike the West Highland Way in three days in July, to raise funds for Barking Mad Dog Rescue (registered charity number 1160985).

96 miles. 8,900 feet of ascent. Three days. Solo.

Here’s why: Barking Mad Dog Rescue does wonderful, lifesaving work in rescue, rehabilitation, care, and where possible rehoming of abandoned dogs in the Castelu region of Romania.

BMDR has achieved so much since its inception a little over ten years ago. More than 3,000 dogs have been saved and successfully rehomed. Countless spay campaigns have been delivered. Unadoptable dogs find safe haven in BMDR’s shelter, where around 300 are cared for and kept from harm. Fantastic collaborative work has been done with the local community, to help foster understanding of the plight of abandoned, neglected and abused dogs. But the work doesn’t stop. The shelter is full. Adoptions have declined. Costs have increased considerably. But countless dogs still need the help of BMDR’s devoted team.
