Help Protect Scotland’s Best-Loved Long Distance Trail
Every time I do the walk, it’s different. The colours, the light, the weather and the people you meet all make each walking experience unique.
This September, Robert Marshall will be completing his 100th walk along the West Highland Way, Scotland's most iconic and beloved trail. What began as a personal challenge over 30 years ago has now grown into a lifelong passion, and Robert is excited to reach this monumental milestone. Over the years, the West Highland Way has given Robert some unforgettable experiences. The trail connects people to nature giving access to the amazing landscapes, wildlife and heritage associated with this long-distance route. However, the Way is under threat, exacerbated by climate change, and needs ongoing care and attention to keep it safe and accessible for all who use it. That’s why Robert is raising funds to help maintain the path he loves so much.
Why Robert Walks the West Highland Way
This is my ‘Keep Fit’ walk. It keeps me in good shape physically and mentally.
The West Highland Way is not just a trail; it’s a part of Scotland’s natural and cultural heritage. Opened in 1980, the 96-mile route stretches from Milngavie to Fort William, from the edge of Scotland’s largest city to its highest mountain via its largest loch, passing through some of the country’s most spectacular scenery. It’s a route that has inspired tens of thousands of walkers every year, from seasoned hikers to first-time adventurers, each drawn by its beauty and challenge.
But as with all treasured landmarks, the West Highland Way requires continuous upkeep. The maintenance of the path surface, drainage, signage, bridges, gates, vegetation clearance, information for walkers, environmental work — a lot goes into keeping the West Highland Way accessible and safe for everyone. Robert’s 100th walk isn’t just a personal milestone; it’s a way to ensure future generations can enjoy the same incredible experience and the wellbeing benefits it brings.
The Goal: Together, We Can Protect the West Highland Way
For this 100th walk, Robert’s goal is to raise £20,000 for the West Highland Way Trust (SC053704) to support the ongoing care and maintenance of the trail. Every donation, no matter how big or small, will help protect and preserve this incredible trail for future generations to enjoy.
In September, Robert will be walking with his six children, ranging in age from 21 to 46. He hopes that one day his grandchildren will be able to enjoy the experience too.
If you’ve walked (run, cycled, wheeled or ridden) some or all of the West Highland Way yourself - or know someone who has - please consider making a donation. If you’re not able to donate, you could also help by sharing this page with friends and family.
