In Memory of Robin Whitfield
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Robin Whitfield after a long battle against Alzheimer’s Disease.
Robin was a significant character in Rugby League, having played for Widnes, Barrow, and Huyton. He continued his love for the game as a top-class referee in the 1980s and 1990s, officiating three Challenge Cup finals and winning Referee of the Year three times.
Robin was a cousin of the late Eric Prescott, but this did not prevent Robin from sending Eric off on multiple occasions. This was typical of Robin, who was a consummate professional; once he took to the pitch, he was impartial and earned the respect of all his peers and the Rugby League family.
When Stephen Prescott was diagnosed with Pseudomyxoma Peritonei in 2006, Robin and his family were among the first to support the Prescott family and subsequently, The Steve Prescott Foundation. This support continued for as long as Robin's health would allow.
Robin's funeral will be on
Monday, 18th August at 12 noon at
St. Michael's Road, Ditton, Widnes, Cheshire
WA8 8TF.
Family flowers only, with donations to
The Steve Prescott Foundation.
Anyone wishing to pay their respects to Robin is more than welcome.
Martin Blondel, General Manager of The Steve Prescott Foundation, said, “On behalf of the SPF, we would like to express our sincerest condolences to Robin’s wife, Lisa, his children, Tracey and Shaun, and his brother, Colin, along with his many friends in Rugby League.
Robin was a legend of Rugby League and a true gentleman. His love of the game was second to none, along with his knowledge.
We would like to thank the Whitfield family for their ongoing support of the foundation and Steve’s legacy.
In times of deepest sadness, a ray of light from your donations will bring a smile to Robin's face in heaven.”
