Roland's Introduction to the Charity
When I moved to Stamford in 2016 I already had a good knowledge of the voluntary sector. However I was amazed to discover the extent of the voluntary sector in Stamford. In particular that Evergreen has developed services that fill the social gaps in people’s lives and helps them to remain independent in their own homes. Loneliness and social isolation are a major challenge for the older population. Evergreen says to vulnerable older people ‘We are here to help you through these challenges. We will, through our 100+ volunteers, aim to help you have support in your home and the community, when you need it most.’
The Project
The high energy costs of the UK effect everybody, charities are no different to householders and businesses. Every pound spent on energy is a pound that cannot be spent on other priorities. Each year Evergreen spends over £2500 on electricity. The Greening Evergreen Project aims to reduce these costs as low as possible. The saved monies can then be directed towards our charitable objectives of supporting people. We are going to do this by fitting solar panels to the roof of our office at SHYP House, in Stamford. Not only will we save on electricity but also earn income when we sell on any surplus electricity generated. If funds allow, we will also improve the energy efficiency of the building to make even greater savings.
The 200 Mile Challenge
Having developed a chronic condition in 2017 I have been only too aware of the importance of the NHS and social care, and the informal, charitable services that fill in the gaps in that care. I am aiming to cycle round the Stamford area covering 200 miles over 7 days. I will need the assistance of an electric bike because I would not even be able to manage the hills out of Stamford without it. However there will be no coasting as the electric motor only works when I am pedalling!
Please support me as I raise funds for a charity that does so much to alleviate social isolation. For the older person this arises in so may ways: from illness, infirmity, family and friends moving away, and the loss of loved close family and friends.
