Story
This year I am running The Belfast City Marathon supporting The Gaitway Organisation.
The Gaitway’s purpose is to develop provision for local children with physical disabilities due to neurological impairment and thereby give them access to a range of physical activities to enable them to become the best version of themselves.
We provide group schemes to children from all over Ireland, during school holiday times based on the world-renowned Conductive Education (CE) or Peto method. We are a small locally based charity and receive no government funding.
At the Gaitway Organisation it is our aim to encourage children to reach their full potential, to help them so they can become as physically and emotionally healthy as possible.
Schemes are delivered by qualified Practitioners (Conductors and physiotherapists) who are assisted by a team of assistants. This allows us to manage a 1:1 level of staffing while delivering the program as a group activity with all the social opportunities that being part of a team brings. Working in this way allows children to maintain their motivation as they encourage each other.
Currently we are running 3 schemes per year during school holiday periods, so that as many children as possible can have the chance to participate.
While the children are participating in the exercise sessions the parents benefit from some well-deserved respite. An additional benefit is the "school gate" experience where parents can meet, support, and learn from each other.
