45km Ski Race for the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) who saved Rosalia’s life!

Steven Bundy is raising money for Friends of PICU

Vasaloppet 45 Cross Country Ski Race · 25 February 2025

We fundraise to buy equipment, fund major projects, desensitise the medical environment and buying a new ambulance for the Children's Intensive Care Unit at Southampton University Hospital. Caring for critically ill children from across the south of England and the Channel Islands.

Story

Beautiful Rosalia was born requiring multiple lifesaving heart surgeries within the first few days of her life. Without the vital care provided by the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Southampton University Hospital, Rosalia would not be with us today.

Rosalia’s unimaginable journey continues with open heart surgery in the near future, preceding more time on PICU.

To help ensure the same level of critical care is available to her and all children in need of it, we are raising money on behalf of the ‘Friends of PICU’ charity.

The Challenge!

Steve Bundy (Rosalia’s father), Stu Harris, Neil Devine and Stu Woods will be racing in the Vasaloppet 45 on 25th February 2025. Vasaloppet is the world’s biggest cross-country ski race, held In Sweden. To add an extra hurdle to the challenge, the first time 3 of them will pick up cross-country ski’s, will be the day before the 45km race!!

Who are ‘Friends of PICU’?

Friends of PICU is a registered charity who support children and their families on the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit Southampton Children’s Hospital at the University Hospital Southampton.

Southampton PICU is the regional lead centre for critically ill children aged from newborn to 18 years.  The children are admitted from 27 referring hospitals across the South of England and the Channel Islands, and from the various children’s wards at Southampton Hospital. Over 1,000 children are admitted each year for specialist care by the skilled and dedicated team.

“Friends of PICU contribute to every part of the specialist care with no patient passing through PICU without being assisted by nursing training and education, the variety of equipment donated, and the caring and considerate environment they have helped to create – Thank You for the incredible support, it is very much appreciated by the whole team and makes an enormous difference". Dr. Iain Macintosh - Chairman & Trustee
