Story
Hi, my name is Rose Kendle, and I have been gifted the opportunity to sail aboard a ship, the 'Helen Mary R', for free through the generosity of my sponsor, the late Edward (Billy) Billington. I'm 16 years old and have just finished my GCSEs at the Roseland Academy. I sail regularly down at St Mawes and I'm fundraising for the Roseland Youth Sailing Trust.
And so firstly, I would like to extend a huge thank you to Helen Billington and to the family and friends who donated in Billy's memory. I have sailed at St Mawes Sailing Club since I was 8 years old, and so I was privileged to be often greeted on a Saturday morning by a warm smile and a word of encouragement from Billy and Helen. I have seen the enormous amount of effort that Billy put into not only RYST but also being a huge part of St Mawes JST, ensuring kids and potentially future members get the opportunity to experience sailing. often for the first time, and hopefully develop the same love that seems to drive much of the St Mawes community.
I hope to fully immerse myself in this voyage aboard Helen Mary R and with our account, photos and feedback help to inspire and encourage children into sailing and intend to assure that this aspect of Billy's legacy lives on.
Therefore, I have planned sponsored hikes of Snowdon and Ben Nevis, the UK's two highest mountains, as a way that our local community can get behind this cause and help others get into sailing and give back in gratitude for the opportunity I was granted.
It would be great to think that through your giving this berth on the Helen Mary R, in Billy's name, on future voyages could continue.
