What can I say about APCAM? Those of you who are closest to me will know something of the struggle that I have not only with my own mental health, now complicated by the realisation that I'm 99% likely to be neurodiverse, but also the struggle that I have had as a parent with children who have struggled and continue to struggle with mental health and neurodiversity. Education has been particularly problematic, especially for Isobel. Whilst I do not want to really go into her story as she wouldn't thank me for it as a teenager, I can say that the last few years have been really difficult for me as a parent. I've felt isolated, incredibly frustrated, anxious, had difficulty managing my own mental health and lost much of my own identity in the constant negotiation between school and home and in just keeping everything and everyone else going. APCAM are a small local charity, driven by a very small team of amazing women. They provide support for parents and support and counselling for young people. They have, without doubt, been the single most positive service that I have engaged with over the last year. They took over the negotiations with the school when I didn't have the mental strength to do it; have provided Isobel with counselling; supported me in filling out my own forms for neurodiverse diagnosis and provided a safe space to just sit and be. And they do this as volunteers alongside their own jobs and lives. Having got a ballot place for London 2025 I always wanted to raise money for a smaller charity and I know that any money I raise for APCAM will literally save lives.
