Story
Cheslyn Hay and Great Wyrley Running Club will be heading to Sheffield, to take part in the Sheffield 10k, raising money for for St Luke's Hospice.
In November, my dad was diagnosed with mesothelioma, a devastating and terminal illness. Sadly, his condition deteriorated quickly, and in January he was moved to St Luke’s Hospice in Sheffield, where he spent his final days.
Although Dad was only there for a short time, the care and compassion shown by every single member of staff – from the doctors and nurses to the catering team and even the cleaners – was simply incredible. They not only cared for Dad’s every need but also created a calm, peaceful environment for our whole family to be together.
One special moment that will stay with me forever was when the team helped us arrange a family dinner with Dad, giving us the precious opportunity to share food, laughter, and memories the night before he passed away. That experience gave us comfort at an incredibly difficult time, and I will always be grateful to St Luke’s for the dignity and love they showed us all.
St Luke’s provides skilled, dedicated care to over 1,000 patients and their families every year – completely free of charge. This vital service costs over £14 million annually, and with only a portion of their funding coming from the NHS, they must raise £10.5 million this year through fundraising and donations.
To give back to this incredible charity, we have arranged for our local running club, Cheslyn Hay & Great Wyrley Running Club, along with friends from Sheffield, to take part in the Sheffield 10K as a team. We’ll have around 40 runners all raising money and awareness for St Luke’s. I’m also hugely grateful to a few local businesses who have stepped in to support us.
Every donation, no matter the size, will help St Luke’s continue providing the exceptional care that meant so much to my family. Please consider sponsoring me and helping this amazing team continue their work, so other families can receive the same love, dignity, and support we were given.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
