Story

Thank you for visiting my JustGiving page!

In March 2026, I’ll be trekking to Everest Base Camp over 12 days to raise money for the North West Air Ambulance Charity. This cause is incredibly close to my heart because in 2012, the NWAA were able to save my stepmum’s life after a serious motorbike accident.

In September 2012, my stepmum Jen suffered multiple life-threatening injuries, including a broken spine, a broken pelvis, broken ribs, punctured lungs, a broken shoulder and a broken collarbone. Due to the severity of her injuries and the remote location, travel by road would have been very dangerous. The NWAA team arrived in less than 10 minutes and her journey to hospital took less than 4 minutes. Without this speed, she may not have survived, or may have ended up paralysed. (That’s her in the photo with a very young me!!)

After a painfully long but incredible journey of recovery, Jen trekked to Everest Base Camp in 2015 to raise money for this charity. She has also since trekked up Mount Kilimanjaro and competed in multiple Iron Man triathlons - none of which would’ve been possible if it weren’t for the fantastic team that saved her life. Overall, she has raised nearly £10,000 for this life-changing charity. Her determination (or possible craziness!) is evidently infectious as it has now inspired me to follow in her footsteps, supporting the NWAA and the vital service they provide... but thankfully without any broken bones! Honestly, if I can raise even a fraction of what she managed to do, it will be an incredible achievement.

You can read about her fantastic story here: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/everestmudbootcamp

The North West Air Ambulance provides critical emergency services across the North West, using three helicopters to reach people in urgent need. It costs £12 million annually to keep the service running, with no government funding—everything is funded through donations. Each mission costs around £3,500, and just filling the fuel tank for one helicopter costs £579, which provides only 2.5 hours of flight time. Your donations will help ensure these helicopters are available to save lives when they’re needed most.

I will be completing the trek with my partner Matt and his father Gary. Everest Base Camp is located at 5,364m above sea level, where the oxygen levels are 50% lower than at sea level, which will make the trek physically and mentally challenging. Over 15 days, I’ll face long days of hiking and acclimatisation. It’s a difficult challenge, but nothing compared to the lifesaving work the NWAA does every day.

I’m fully self-funding this adventure, meaning 100% of your donation will go directly to the NWAA. Your support will help keep their helicopters in the air, provide essential life-saving equipment, and support the paramedics and pilots who do such important work.

I’m aiming to raise £1000 for the North West Air Ambulance. Every donation, big or small, will make a real difference - even if it’s just the price of your morning coffee or Friday night pint! Your contribution could help fuel a helicopter, support paramedics, or provide the resources that make a real impact on lives in need. I’ve seen the incredible work they do and how their quick actions allow people another chance at life.

Thank you so much for supporting this amazing cause. I’ll keep you updated throughout my trek so you can follow my journey every step of the way.

Thank you,

Rowan
