Roxane's fundraiser for The Flow Country Partnership

Roxane Andersen is raising money for The Flow Country Partnership

Through Flow (part 2): another 100 km journey across the Flow Country of northern Scotland · 4 April 2026

The organisation aims to protect, conserve, and enhance the Flow Country for public benefit, focusing on peatland ecosystems and biodiversity. It promotes sustainable land management, education on the area's value, and community development, supporting environmental and economic sustainability.

Story

My name is Roxane Andersen, I live in Caithness with my husband and two young kids. We all love spending time together outside and going on adventures.

I work as a peatland scientist with the Environmental Research Institute, part of UHI North, West and Hebrides. My research is based locally and seeks to understand how peatland cope with land use and climate change.

This is because I’m lucky to live and work right next to the Flow Country: the most extensive and intact blanket bog ecosystem in the world, covering approximately 4000 km2 across Caithness and Sutherland in the north of Scotland, of which 1900 km2 were inscribed in 2024 as part of a new UNESCO World Heritage Site. This is the only peatland in the world to have achieved this status!

For the last three years, I have also been a Trustee for the Flow Country Partnership, a local charity that seeks to grow the resilience of the Flow Country and its people. Last year, I completed a fundraising challenge, traversing 110km across the Flow Country from west to east on foot in a single day to raise awareness of this incredible landscape. I was hoping to raise £19,000 - £10 for each km2 within the World Heritage Site Boundary - to support the ongoing work of the Flow Country Partnership…but I fell short of my fundraising target by £16,242.

So here I am again! This time, I have designed a new south-north route, still connecting tracks, paths and roads to showcase the landscape without impacting it. I have teamed up with a local film maker to help document the journey and tell the story. I will also, once again, be joined by a small support crew and cheered along by family and friends.

I plan to attempt this new traverse on the 4th of April.
