In October 2023, I had the honour of joining Jigsaw Charity UK in Lebanon, where we witnessed firsthand the dire situation faced by refugees, particularly women, grappling with the harsh reality of period poverty. These refugees, including many Palestinian and Syrian refugees, are among the most vulnerable populations, enduring unimaginable hardships as they seek safety and stability.

The demographic of refugees in Lebanon paints a stark picture of the challenges they face. With approximately 1.5 million Syrian refugees, 207,000 Palestinian refugees and 14,800 refugees with other nationalities in Lebanon, many are women and children. With plummeting economic conditions pushing 78% of the Lebanese population below the poverty line, refugees bear the brunt of this crisis, often lacking access to even the most basic necessities like food and hygiene items.

Period poverty compounds the struggles of refugee women, depriving them of essential menstrual hygiene products and forcing them to make impossible choices between meeting their basic needs and managing their menstruation with dignity. This lack of access not only impacts their physical health but also perpetuates stigma and shame, further marginalising an already vulnerable population.

Every donation you make directly supports initiatives aimed at providing menstrual hygiene products, education, and resources to refugee women in Lebanon. A donation of £35 can provide a dignity bag along with an awareness session, while £25 can support the provision of food parcels.
