ASICS Windermere Marathon · 18 May 2024 ·

We support those affected by HIE (hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy), which is a lack of oxygen to the brain that can cause injury. We offer practical, financial and emotional support, at any stage of the HIE journey, and want to ensure that no-one feels they are on their own.

Story

On Saturday 18th May myself, Chelsea + Jordan will be running the Windermere Marathon in support of Peeps HIE, a charity who provide support to families + friends of those affected by HIE (Hypoxic-Ischaemic Encephalopathy), raising awareness of HIE.

On 14th April 2022, after a stressful and extremely complicated labour, my incredible wife Rachel gave birth to our wonderful daughter Ronni Willow Walker. With complications throughout the labour process, we were told Ronni had experienced a HIE event during birth.

HIE is where there is a lack of oxygen and blood flow supplied to the brain, before, during or shortly after labour. The severity of damage can vary greatly, from grade 1 which is mild, to grade 3 which is severe.

Regardless of the outcome, parents and families can be greatly effected by the events that unfold during, and after someone experiences a HIE event. The event can be completely unexpected and traumatic for families to encounter.

The time after a HIE event is a rollercoaster, there are highs and lows experienced by all effected. Certain situations may trigger certain feelings, sometimes when you least expect them.

The important thing we always remember is that we're not alone. We are surrounded by the most wonderful people we could ever imagine and we are so grateful for all the support we receive on a daily basis. We couldn't do it without you.

Peeps can only continue to provide support and reach more families touched by HIE, thanks to the generosity of those that donate to the cause.
