Story

Hello and thank you for looking at our page! We're attempting to run 4 Ultramarathons in 3 days from Oxford to London, starting on the 5th June. The run totals OVER 200km, ending at Parliament. The routes for Day 1-3 are in the 'view gallery' button above! We promise we had this idea before Jamie Laing but it's been great to see it's possible!! With Jack's furthest distance he's ever run reaching a whopping 6km this is going to be very very tough with a lot of training of the next few months.

We’re doing this challenge for Motor Neurone Disease and are partnering with MNDA charity for it. All of us have either directly been affected by the disease or know people very close to us that have. The commonality of the disease (1 in 300) was a surprise to us all when we started looking into it and shows the importance of raising money for care and research. All 3 of us are big rugby players, both Union and League, and have had our own concussions and head knocks. The rising cases of the disease in the sport is worrying and we would like to do whatever we can do to help. The incredible efforts of rugby legends, like Kevin Sinfield, Rob Burrow, Ed Slater and Doddy Weir, to raise money has inspired us to make our own efforts for tackling this disease.

The money being raised will go towards MNDA which is an incredible charity with over 10,000 members forming a powerful national and local network. MNDA provides vital support for those living with the disease, their families, and caregivers. In 2023 the charity answered over 5,745 calls with their specialised MND helpline, MND Connect. Services like these provided by MNDA provide a crucial role in helping those affected by the disease. The charity offers practical assistance, emotional guidance, and access to specialised equipment and services that help enhance the quality of life for people with MND.

In addition to direct support, MNDA plays a crucial role in raising awareness about MND and advocating for better care and resources. The charity funds groundbreaking research aimed at understanding the causes of the disease, improving treatments, and ultimately finding a cure. MNDA currently has 109 grants in their research portfolio, totalling a value of almost £21m. The charity ensures there is collaboration between researchers, healthcare professionals, and policymakers, meaning that individuals with MND receive the care and attention they need.

What is Motor Neurone Disease?

MND is a progressive neurological condition that affects the nerves in the brain and spinal cord, leading to muscle weakness, loss of mobility, and difficulty in speaking, swallowing, and breathing. While there is currently no cure, treatments and support can help manage symptoms and improve quality of life for those affected.

Motor neurons are cells which initiate and control voluntary movement. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), the commonest form of motor neuron disease (MND) and the third commonest form of neurodegenerative disease after Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, is currently incurable. We now know that it arises for a complex set of reasons, including harmful genetic variants and environmental factors.

Here are just some statistics to show the challenges of the disease and the unknown commonality of the disease:

- MND kills 1/3 of diagnosed patients within one year and over ½ within two years

- 1 in 300 people will get MND (that’s an average cinema viewing size)

- Over 80% of MND patients lose all communication abilities

- There is no cure (yet)

Any donations that any of you could give would be amazing and is going towards such a good cause. Thank you!
