Story
2026 marks 15 years since we lost our beautiful boy Sonny, who passed away in 2011. It’s hard to believe so much time has passed, as there isn’t a day that goes by when we don’t think of his smile, his bravery, his love of Arsenal and the way he stayed positive despite everything that was thrown at him.
It feels like the right year to raise money in his honour, which is why I’ll be taking on the London Marathon in Sonny’s memory.
Some of you will know what an extraordinary journey he had. Throughout his illness, Sonny faced every challenge with courage and laughter - countless procedures, chemotherapy, months in hospital and finally a life-saving bone marrow transplant. When he needed that crucial transplant, it was Anthony Nolan who made the impossible possible, finding a donor in America and organising the transfer despite the 2010 volcanic ash cloud that grounded all air traffic on the very day it was due to be flown over.
Somehow, against all the odds, they made it happen. That moment perfectly summed up the determination, teamwork and love that surrounded Sonny throughout his life.
Running the London Marathon feels like the perfect way to honour that spirit and celebrate Sonny’s courage, as well as the incredible people who helped him along the way.
This run is for Sonny and for Anthony Nolan, whose life-saving work continues to give families like ours hope when they need it most.
Sonny taught us that we should never, ever give up - and I certainly won’t during my race.
