Story

I’m raising funds for the Hospice of the Good Shepherd in memory of our cousin, Katie. Sadly Katie passed away on the 23rd March 2025.

In memory of Katie, I’ll be running at least 10km a day for 500 consecutive days (starting Thursday 10th April 2025 to Sunday 23rd August 2026). Follow my journey on Instagram - @jdw_run

Katie’s story is one of incredible strength and resilience. Here’s more about her journey:

In November 2019, Katie married her husband, Rob, and we all gathered to celebrate what was truly a magical day. The newlyweds settled into their home, excited for the future.

Then, in July 2021, everything changed. At just 34 years old, Katie was diagnosed with Stage 4 bowel cancer. Despite experiencing ongoing anaemia and stomach pains, and consulting doctors for months, the diagnosis came only after an unlikely twist of fate: a skydive organised by a friend to raise money for breast cancer.

The skydive, while thrilling, caused Katie’s stomach pain to worsen and spread to her right shoulder. It was this new symptom that led to further tests, ultimately revealing the devastating diagnosis. By the time doctors discovered the cancer, it had already reached an advanced stage, with Katie’s liver compromised by 75%.

Throughout this ordeal, Katie showed us all what true strength, courage, and determination looks like. Every single day, she continued to fight, and we are all incredibly proud of her.

The reason I am raising money for the Hospice of the Good Shepherd is below:

The Hospice of the Good Shepherd provides specialised care for individuals with life-limiting illnesses. Their focus is on offering compassionate, palliative care to ensure comfort and dignity at the end of life. They offer:

Pain and symptom management: Relieving physical discomfort and managing symptoms associated with terminal conditions.

Emotional and psychological support: Providing counselling and support for both patients and their families, addressing emotional, mental, and spiritual needs.

End-of-life care: Delivering holistic care that focuses on comfort and quality of life rather than curative treatments.

Respite care: Offering temporary relief for family caregivers by taking over patient care when needed.

Bereavement support: Providing grief counselling for family members and loved ones both during and after the patient’s passing.

Their services are typically tailored to each individual’s needs, promoting a peaceful, dignified, and supportive environment for those nearing the end of life.
