Russell's fundraiser for Prost8 UK

Russell Jefferies is raising money for Prost8 UK
Prost8 UK is campaigning to make overtreatment of prostate cancer a thing of the past for men with medium-grade or recurrent disease. The NHS needs to expand deployment of new focal treatments such as ultrasound or cryotherapy faster. We aim to lead the way by donating treatment suites to the NHS.

Story

Prostate Cancer Day 1, 31st January 2025 went to doctors for a blood test and requested a PSA test. Doctor asked why do you want a test, have you any symptoms? I replied due to my age at 64 I would like to have it checked. Five days later, received a phone call saying we need to see you as your PSA is a little high at 5.7.

You then start to think what could be causing the high PSA reading. Next stage is the MRI scan which shows a high probability of cancer. Then the biopsy which confirms you have it, and the severity.

You then see the consultant who informs you of the treatment options available. Which for me were surgery, radiotherapy and the third option sit and wait and have regular check ups. You are given a booklet outlining all the different treatments available and their side effects. You then go away and make your mind up which route you wish to go down. There was no mention of other options within the NHS you could have.

After researching the subject I found out more about HIFU treatment as our hospital did not have much knowledge of it. I later found that it wasn’t suitable for me, so I finished up having Radiotherapy. That finished 5th September 2025 so this year on the same date I will embark on a Cycling trip to climb 6 mountains that have been part of the Tour de France over the years. This is 250miles over 6 days.

I booked this trip as a personal challenge but thought as I am doing it I may as well do it for a charity. So as Prost8 is helping fund machines to treat men with a less invasive treatment I would do this ride for this Charity.

At four and ten months post radiotherapy my PSA is down to normal with no sign of Cancer, fingers crossed
