Trees are vital to the environment and people

We exist to empower communities to reduce poverty through locally-led development projects in education, disability care and community development in Western Rwanda. Our ultimate goal is to no longer be needed, so we make sure all our projects tackle development issues in a sustainable way.

Story

The target of £7000 has been reached, when gift aid and offline donations are included.

Thank you all so much! The tree nurseries will go ahead this year and produce around 150,000 trees for communities in Rwanda...!

Any additional funds raised now will be carried over to 2024 for the same project.

Community Tree Nurseries – supporting livelihoods and the environment

Rwanda Action supports the maintenance of tree nurseries in southwest Rwanda. These are community nurseries that provide tree seedlings vital for people struggling to make a living on small plots of land.

Trees help people to become more self-sufficient through use and sale of their products - timber, firewood and fruit - as well as soil improvement, better crops and health.

Supporting the tree nurseries can also contribute to mitigation for your carbon release.

Community tree nurseries in Rwanda

Each tree nursery produces around 30,000 tree seedlings p.a.

We are currently fund-raising for 5 nurseries in 2023

The tree nurseries are requested by community members, who then provide the manual work in building the tree nurseries, transport of manure, transplant seedlings, water and keep an eye on seedlings as they grow. Rwanda Action provides funds to purchase materials such as seeds, transplanting pots, manure and watering cans.

Most tree seedlings are distributed free of charge to people in the community. Some grafted fruit trees are charged. The trees are planted on farmer’s smallholdings, roadsides and community woodlots to provide building timber, firewood, fruit to combat malnutrition, soil conservation and income. There are many other direct and indirect benefits from planting trees – see the list below.

Trees:

Provide food – fruit, nuts, seeds, leaves

Provide renewable firewood, building timber and charcoal

Provide livestock fodder

Provide medicines from roots, bark, leaves and seeds

Provide an income from these products

Absorb C02 and store carbon

Absorb other air pollution

Provide oxygen

Provide shade from sun for crops, livestock and people

Increase rainwater percolation into soil

Reduce soil erosion on steep slopes

Increase soil fertility - Nitrogen fixing species

Increase health and wellbeing – physically, mentally and spiritually

Provide wildlife habitats

Climate change threatens to reverse any progress towards eradicating poverty.
