"Thank you for donating to the Teenage and Young Adult team at the Beatson Cancer Centre. Your donations will help the TYA team help to suppport young people through difficult times of their lives like they did with me.
My cancer journey started in September 2024 when after a game of 5-a-side football I had noticed a small lump. After a few of weeks of back and forth to my GP, I eventually got an appointment at Gartnavel, where I was diagnosed with cancer. I was told that day that I would need emergency surgery to remove the lump, which I then had on the 18th November.
After a successful surgery, I found out that it was Stage 2 Germ Cell Cancer and was told I would have to undergo at least 1 round of Chemotherapy starting January 2025 (not a great way to start the year!).
I was first admitted to the Beatson on 3rd Jan to start the main part of the chemo. I was then discharged on the 6th as planned however what was not planned was my quick return to the Beatson on the 9th January with an infection.
I was treated for severely low white blood cells caused by a combination of the chemo and the infection and was then kept in until the 15th January. After finishing my cycle on 17th, I recovered at home and have slowly started to feel back to myself since.
The Beatson took amazing care of me throughout and the staff were incredble, especially my Advanced Clinical Nurse Specialist, Aidan. He went above and beyond for me and the Beatson even allowed my girlfriend Megan to stay with me for the whole duration. This was great as Megan was with me so I wasn't alone at night when my chemo was happening and I was most unwell, meaning if I needed anything, she was there to help and support.
The Teenage and Young Adult team at the Beatson have a room with a pool table, TV with sports channels and Xbox which was a great place to escape to.
Myself and Megan are organising a Charity Football Match with our friends and family to help raise money to give back to the team that looked after me so well. Tickets for the game will be sold on Eventbrite however any donations will be greatly appreciated to help the team improve lives of other young people battling cancer. Thank you!" - Ryan McGill
