Alisha and Toby's fundraiser for Saint Francis Hospital, Katete, Zambia

Alisha Coll is raising money for University of Dundee
“Medical elective”
Responsible Electives was created by Dundee Medical School to help suitably motivated students find an elective in a resource poor setting where they learn lots, with a proven host, who will also benefit from their presence.

Story

I've created this page because of my participation in the Responsible Electives Campaign. Part of the ethos of Responsible Elective is that as well as working, I will donate money to the hospital to enable the provision of resources to people seeking medical attention. This means any money you donate will be going directly to the hospital, and I'll be funding my flights etc myself.

As part of our final year at medical school, we will be undertaking a 6 week placement at Saint Francis Hospital in Zambia. This is a voluntary placement where we will adapt to a completely different healthcare system while integrating into the Zambian culture and local tribal languages.

All money raised will go directly to the hospital which serves a population of around 200,000 people. Fundraising from previous medical students from our university has enabled the hospital to implement changes and purchase equipment. Just this year, they were able to buy their first CT machine.

We would like to use our donations to fund 25 Arclight devices for the hospital. The Arclight is a device that can be used to examine both the eyes and ears. They are an effective alternative to traditional, more bulky tools. They can fit in a shirt pocket and can be charged via a cable or even by solar power. They are sold at a higher price in wealthier countries, helping to lower the cost in low-resource settings and improve access to essential eye and ear care. This is very important in the screening of preventable causes of deafness and blindness.

We plan to deliver training to staff on the use of the Arclight during our time at the hospital. The company have very kindly offered to give us some simulation eye models to practice identifying different abnormalities. They have also offered to assist virtually with the training.

Thank you in advance for your generosity, it means a lot!
