This year I’m celebrating my 60th Birthday & Flat Friends UK are celebrating 10 years of supporting women like me.

When I was diagnosed with breast cancer nearly 13 years ago I didn’t know whether I would make it to 60 & I’ve lost lots of fabulous friends in that period. So in the words of my friend Rachel I am getting up and making the most of every day and am holidaying every month of my 60th Birthday year. My final trip in November/ December is a cruise from Rome to Miami and on the top deck running track I will run 10 5ks with the first as we leave Rome & the last as we enter Miami.

I’ve chosen Flat Friends as my charity to celebrate that for 10 years they have supported & advocated for women who have chosen not to reconstruct after mastectomy. I’ve been a member of the group for 10 years & was a founder Trustee and during that time have seen first hand the brilliant work they do. But there is still important work to do. I’ve been a Breast Cancer Now volunteer for 10 years supporting women post mastectomy and there are still women fighting to have symmetry surgery down rather than up via reconstruction. These funds will help Flat Friends not only support thousands of women coming to terms with their new bodies, but to fund research and advocacy so that in future women don’t have to fight for the surgery they want.
