Story
In May last year my lovely dad Dave, was told that the cancer he had been ‘living with’ for the previous 7 years had become terminal, and that he could expect to live between 1 year to 18 months. As a close and loving family, we were completely devastated, as anybody is and would be in that situation.
My dad was a runner, he ‘ran the world’ in the 80s and Robin Hood Half Marathon twice, once in full Robin Hood costume.
When we got the terrible news, I decided to do a 5k Race For Life in Hyde Park, me being the definition of Couch to 5k. I’ll always be happy both my parents were able to be there, to witness the beginnings of me being less of a lazy cow.
Very sadly, it became clear within weeks of the prognosis that Dad's cancer had spread to his brain. 1 year to 18 months, became 6 months, and then only ‘weeks’.
It was the most difficult and heartbreaking time for us as a family, and still is very hard.
Dad died in September last year and this year’s Robin Hood Half Marathon falls 3 days after what will be the first anniversary. So, it felt fitting that I put myself through the pain and try and raise as much money as possible for Prostate Cancer UK, I know he’d be proud I kept up the running.
