Wednesday 10th September is World Suicide Awareness Day.
Suicide remains the leading cause of death in the UK for men under 50, with 11 lives lost every single day. Separation and family breakdown heighten this risk dramatically. Research shows separated parents are far more likely to experience suicidal thoughts, with fathers in particular facing disproportionately high risks compared to the wider population.
At Both Parents Matter, we know the difference the right support can make. Before coming to us, nearly 40% of separated dads told us they had experienced suicidal thoughts. After receiving our support, 65% reported feeling better able to cope emotionally, and 80% felt more confident in managing their situation. By supporting parents through one of life’s most difficult challenges, the charity helps to save lives and rebuild hope.
On 10th September, Sam Morfey, the charity's CEO, and Paul O'Callaghan, the Chair of Trustees, will be walking 11 miles around central London to raise awareness and vital funds. Starting in Parliament Square and finishing at the Royal Courts of Justice, we will also be handing in a petition at 10 Downing Street.
Paul says: “This charity is deeply personal to me. I know first-hand the pain of family breakdown and the devastation of being alienated from my eldest daughter. I remain hopeful that one day we will be reunited, but I also know how vital it is that no family faces this journey alone. We must continue to support parents at the point of breakdown, always putting children first, and ensure Both Parents Matter can keep making a difference.”
Sam says: "The charity was vital to help me at my lowest ebb. Now as CEO I receive countless messages from dads in a very tough place, and almost always mentally and emotionally. Both Parents Matter does critical work helping them to a better place, putting them on the path to be the best parent possible for their child. No child should lose a parent to suicide after separation."
As a charity reliant on fundraisers, we would love your support. By sponsoring our walk, you’ll be helping to prevent more families from facing the devastating impact of suicide. Every donation, large or small, will make a difference.
Donating through JustGiving is quick, secure, and safe. Your details are protected, and every penny goes directly to the charity — saving time and cutting costs, so more of your gift supports families in need.
Together, we can raise awareness, save lives and make sure both parents matter.
