In 2024 Beyond Ourselves has been delivering literacy training across the Copperbelt Province supporting teachers as they tackle the problem of low literacy levels. We will also continue to support Kawama School professionally and financially.

Story

Since 2011 Cranleigh School has partnered with Beyond Ourselves to offer quality education to orphans and vulnerable children in the Copperbelt region of Zambia.

In particular, Cranleigh has a long lasting and meaningful relationship with Kawama Community School in Kitwe. Over this time, the generous support from the Cranleigh community has provided the building and maintenance of six classrooms, a toilet block and kitchen, and given nearly a 1000 children access to a high standard primary education.

The District Education Board cite Kawama Community School as an excellent example of practice for other Community Schools in the Copperbelt. Many of our students have had the opportunity to visit Kawama and the impact of those visits is significant.

Hi, my name is Sam, and along with 17 other pupils from my school I will also be raising money for this charity. I am honoured to have the opportunity to visit Kawama Community school in Zambia in October.

To raise funds for building and improving the school I am setting myself a personal challenge by taking on the Northern line stairs. It is the oldest and busiest tube line in London. At every one of the 52 tube stops I will be running up and down the stairs, never using the escalators, whilst picking up rubbish.

Along the way, I will also be cleaning the Northern Line by picking up any litter that I see on the stairs and the platform. The climb includes Hampstead tube station which is famous for its 320-step spiral staircase which is equivalent to the height of a 15 storey building. I am aiming to complete this challenge within 12 hours on Friday 29 August.

I would be very grateful if you could sponsor me as I attempt my challenge and support this wonderful charity.
