Story

Thank you for visiting our JustGiving page. On April 27, 2025, Sam and Lucy will be running the London Marathon in support of Macmillan Cancer Support, a cause that has become deeply personal for us.

As many of you know, our world changed forever on April 9, 2024. Sam’s Dad, Lucy’s father-in-law, Jeff Waltho, was diagnosed with metastatic adenocarcinoma of the appendix—a rare and aggressive cancer. Until just a week before his diagnosis, he had only experienced mild, lingering symptoms. The shock of this devastating news was overwhelming, and we never imagined how quickly his health would decline. Tragically, Jeff passed away on June 18, 2024, just ten weeks after we received that heart-wrenching diagnosis. Our hearts are broken.

During those 70 days, Jeff spent 50 in the hospital, with his final 23 days in The Nightingale Macmillan Ward at the Royal Derby Hospital. The incredible staff there did everything they could to make him comfortable, but it was the love, support, and kindness extended to our family that truly carried us through this unimaginable time. We will forever be grateful for the compassion we received from the nurses, doctors, and volunteers who stood by us when we needed it most.

Now, we feel compelled to give back, ensuring that other families can access the amazing care Macmillan Cancer Support provides.

For those who know Sam and Lucy, you’ll appreciate that they are on opposite ends of the running spectrum—Lucy is a seasoned marathon runner, while Sam is still finding his footing at 5km! Despite these differences, this challenge will test both of them in ways they never expected, especially during those chilly, wet, and windy training runs.

It is an honour for us to run in memory of Dad and to raise as much as we can for Macmillan Cancer Support, helping them continue their vital work for other families facing cancer. We are incredibly grateful for any donation you can make to this amazing charity. Your support means the world to us and will truly help us reach the finish line.

This is for Dad. ❤️
