Peak to Paddle Lake District for Greene King · 4 September 2025

Hungry Horse team members and customers are fundraising throughout the year to raise money for their charity partner Macmillan Cancer Support.

Story

This exciting multi activity challenge takes us from the heights of Helvellyn (3rd highest mountain in the Lake District), south through Grasmere and Ambleside, back to our base on the shores of Lake Windermere!

After a short coach transfer, our challenge starts with the trekking element as we ascend Helvellyn from the Thirlmere side. There's very little warm up as we're soon into the steepest section of the route up to Browncove Crags. A less steep ridge then takes us to Lower Man and on to the summit of Helvellyn, where hopefully our efforts will be rewarded with stunning views across the entire Lake District.

Once we've descended off the mountain it's time to jump on our bikes for the 12-14 mile cycle element.

Initial we enjoy a lovely descent into Grasmere before a challenging ascent up Red Bank and then another descent past Tarn Howes to Skelwith Bridge. Shortly after we reach Ambleside and the northern tip of Lake Windermere before continuing down the eastern shore for 5 miles back to our base near Bowness.

The final challenge of the day is a 2mile kayak loop around some islands and across the lake. On windy days the surface of the lake can be quite choppy so the exact route will be managed depending on the conditions on the day. Paddling back to our base marks the successful completion of this tough but wonderful challenge.

Hungry Horse and Greene King are proud to have supported Macmillan since 2012 and have helped to raise over £20 million. We are fundraising to that Macmillan can help everyone with cancer live life as fully as they can and continue to provide physical, financial and emotional support.
