Story

I am grateful for my health, strength, and sense of adventure. I have been fortunate to travel widely and experience many incredible adventures along the way. However, it is with a heavy heart that I reflect on the alarming statistics regarding mental health among young people in England. In 2020, 147 young individuals aged 15-19 took their own lives, and this number rose to 198 in 2021—the highest in over three decades.

To mark my departure from my permanent teaching contract, I am excited to undertake a personal cycling challenge along the Camino del Norte, traversing Spain's northern coastline. This route is renowned for its breathtaking scenery, charming coastal towns, and challenging hilly terrain. It is a journey that symbolizes resilience and hope.

Many people find it difficult to speak openly or ask for help during tough times. Yet, we know that talking can be life-saving—whether it's with a colleague, family member, friend, or helpline like Samaritans. Every 10 seconds, Samaritans volunteers respond to a call for help. They are available for free, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, ready to listen and support anyone facing challenges without judgment.

It’s only through your generous donations and the dedication of over 23,000 listening volunteers that Samaritans can continue their vital work in supporting those who are struggling to cope. My goal is to raise £1,000 for this incredible cause as I embark on this cycling adventure with my partner, Ruth. Together we can make a difference—thank you for your support!
