On 14 June, I’ll be taking on one of the toughest cycling challenges in the UK; ‘The Dragon Ride’. I’ve chosen the legendary Dragon Devil route and, even for someone used to long days of endurance sport, it feels daunting. While I’ve spent years competing in triathlons, riding nearly 296 km with over 4,500 metres of climbing is something else entirely. I’ll likely be in the saddle for over 12 hours, pushing myself further than I ever have before.

Without doubt, this will be the biggest physical and mental challenge I’ve ever taken on. It will demand every ounce of resilience, determination and heart I have. And while I usually take part in events like this purely for the challenge, this one is deeply personal. I’ll be riding for someone who embodies all the qualities I’ll need on that day — my Uncle Simon.

Our family has always known Simon to be strong, stubborn in the best possible way, and endlessly full of heart. He’s the kind of person who meets every challenge head on, usually with a joke, a grin, or a cheeky comment. But last year, our world changed when Simon was diagnosed with bowel cancer. Despite every treatment and every effort, the cancer has since spread, and we’re now at the stage where no further medical treatment can help.

Even in the face of something so cruel, Simon’s strength and spirit have never wavered. Throughout his life, and especially during retirement, he has dedicated himself to making the world a better place for future generations. It’s something I hope his granddaughter's Freya and Nayeli, and my own daughters, will all benefit from. Simon has spent countless hours planting trees, volunteering with organisations like the Stroud Valleys Project and the National Trust, supporting many nature and community projects. Earlier this year, he achieved one of his proudest personal goals: planting 5,000 trees. Those trees will stand long into the future, just as his legacy will. He has also inspired my own environmentally minded daughter to continue doing her part to protect the planet.

Simon’s courage, humour and refusal to let this illness define him have shown all of us what true resilience looks like. Watching him has made me reflect deeply on my own views about life. Even now, he continues to connect with and embrace the people around him, sharing his wisdom and kindness.

During this incredibly difficult time, Longfield Hospice in Stroud has been a lifeline for our family. Their care, dignity, kindness and compassion have helped Simon, Elaine, Charlie, Ben and Joanna navigate something no one is ever prepared for. They have provided comfort, space and reassurance when it has been needed most, and we are endlessly grateful.

To honour Simon, and to support other families facing similar unimaginable challenges, I will be taking on the Dragon Devil route as a fundraiser for Longfield Hospice. Compared to what Simon has faced, it feels like the very least I can do. I hope it can help make a meaningful difference to others who need the same care and support.
