Story
We’re walking for the millions of families living with dementia, and for the loved ones we’ve each seen affected first-hand.
For Sanober, this cause is deeply personal — her mother lives with dementia, and with her family caring for her every day, she understands just how much strength it takes to support someone you love through this disease.
For Gareth, it's close to home — His mum Margaret was diagnosed with young-onset Alzheimer’s at just 54 , and he has openly shared his family’s journey and experiences on tv such as Made in Chelsea, Lorraine, GMB and furthermore in the press to raise awareness of the reality of living with this illness. By using his platform to speak honestly about such a painful experience, Gareth has helped break stigma and shine a light on why funding support and research is so vital, in particular raising awareness for early and accurate diagnosis and helping highlight the support network and community charities like Alzhiemers Society offer for those effected.
For Ollie, the impact has been shared — standing beside Gareth and his family, he’s witnessed the daily struggles and challenges that dementia brings, and knows how important support and research really are.
We’re united in this walk to honour our families, to raise awareness, and to help the Alzheimer’s Society fund the care, support, and research that can change lives. Every step we take is for them — and for a future without dementia.
Dementia is the UKs biggest killer. Someone develops it every three minutes and currently there is no cure. We know it is scary but we must confront the biggest health & social care challenge of our time. We owe it to the 1 million people across the UK currently living with dementia to campaign for change, whilst providing vital day-to-day support. By taking part and raising money, or donating to someone who is, you are helping to do this.
Once you donate, JustGiving sends your money directly to Alzheimer's Society you don't need to do anything and it's the most efficient way to fundraise. So, who will you walk for? #MemoryWalk
