Story
I'm taking on the 2026 Edinburgh Marathon for Beat, the UK's eating disorder charity!
❗ Currently, at least 1.25 million people in the UK are suffering from an eating disorder - that's more than 1 in 50
❗ Eating disorders do not discriminate - they affect people of all ages, genders, ethnicities and backgrounds
❗ Anorexia has the highest mortality rate of any mental illness
Unfortunately, I contributed to the first statistic for the majority of my teens and into my early 20's - leading me to develop severe anxiety and depression, turn to self harm as a means to cope, give up sports I loved, take a year out of university and debate whether I wanted to be here anymore. My eating disorder severely affected my quality of life, however, it also affected those I care about most - my family, friends and boyfriend.
Whilst it doesn't seem like it at the time, recovery is possible and research shows that early intervention makes a monumental difference. This is where Beat comes in. From their helpline to their online workshops and chatrooms, they are on a mission to end the pain caused by eating disorders by providing free support for not only the individual, but also their loved ones; bringing people together to ensure recovery is possible.
Sadly, I did not know of Beat’s services during the majority of my illness, however, they provided vital support and advice to my parents, allowing them to better understand my struggles and how to help me recover – without this, I would have undoubtedly suffered for far longer.
This amazing charity is extremely close to my heart and my family’s, and I would like to raise as much money and awareness as I can to help ensure others do not suffer in silence and to help end the ‘taboo’ around eating disorders.
Diabolically, Beat receive no funding from central government, and rely solely on the generosity of their supporters to help them continue their vital work. Every donation makes a difference, so if you can spare anything, please support Beat's mission to help people access vital support, bring hope to those affected by eating disorders and ensure no one has to face these struggles alone.
