Story
This September, our family and friends will be taking part in the Swansea Bay 10K to raise money and awareness for the UK Sepsis Trust, following the devastating loss of the Queen of our family, earlier this year to sepsis.
We’ll also have a group of amazing supporters joining us on the day, cheering us on around the course and helping us spread the message and raise even more awareness of sepsis.
Losing someone you love changes everything, but if we can use our experience to help raise awareness, encourage someone to recognise the signs, or give another family the confidence to speak up when they feel something isn't right, then something positive can come from such an incredibly devastating time.
Sepsis is a life-threatening reaction to an infection and is a medical emergency. It can affect anyone and recognising it quickly can make a huge difference. The UK Sepsis Trust estimates that around 245,000 people develop sepsis in the UK each year and around 48,000 people die from it – That’s more than 5 people every hour.
Sepsis does not discriminate. It can affect anyone, at any age — from newborn babies and children to healthy adults and the elderly. No one is immune. The signs and symptoms of sepsis can also present differently depending on the age group, which makes awareness and knowing when something isn't right even more important.
Behind every one of those numbers is a person, a family and a group of people whose lives can be changed forever.
This is why raising awareness is so important. Sepsis can progress incredibly quickly and recognising that something isn't right and getting help as early as possible can save lives.
The UK Sepsis Trust works tirelessly to change this. They educate healthcare professionals, raise public awareness of the signs and symptoms of sepsis, provide support to survivors and families affected by sepsis and campaign for improvements in sepsis care. Their trained Support Nurses also provide vital support to people recovering from sepsis and to families dealing with bereavement.
Every donation, no matter how big or small, will help the UK Sepsis Trust continue raising awareness, educating healthcare professionals and supporting people and families whose lives have been affected by sepsis.
Please share our page and help us spread the word. Someone recognising the signs of sepsis because of something they have read or heard could make all the difference.
We can't change what happened to our family, but we can try to make a difference for another.
Thank you for every donation, share and message of support. It means more to us than we can say.
For our Queen. 👑
