Breast Friends and Family support breast cancer patients at St John’s Hospital in Livingston, through diagnosis, treatment and recovery; to provide the little things that make a big difference. Breast Friends and Family has been setup by Hazel, her sister Mandy, mother Sylvia and daughter Holly. Hazel was diagnosed with breast cancer in June 2015 which shocked the family but the challenges this diagnosis brought were faced with a steely determination to keep life going as normal and provide Hazel with the support she needed through treatment and recovery. The family realised that patients are supported by a number of cancer charities, each one giving additional support that patients are not even aware that they need. They began fund raising, by dancing, running, walking, knitting, sewing and organising events in support of many cancer charities. Hazel was given lots of support from a local charity based at St John’s Hospital in Livingston. As she recovered she wanted to help and support this local charity so that others like her, having a breast cancer diagnosis, were helped in the way that she was. Sadly this charity is no longer running. Hazel and her family and friends are now determined to make sure that all patients diagnosed with breast cancer at St John’s, are given the kind of help they don’t even realise they need. Providing the little things that make a big difference.

Story

Like cake? Like coffee or tea that's so good you sigh with happiness and then close your eyes when you're drinking it?

Date for your diary - Sunday 2nd March 2025 3.30-5.30pm, The Haven Cafe.

When I was going through treatment, waiting for results, surgeries and everything that came along with my breast cancer, there were days when it just wasn't going well. On those days in particular, I would head along to The Haven Cafe.

Its familiar vibe and the breathing space it gave me was just what I needed. My usual wee seat at the window always seemed to be free as if it knew I needed to forget things for a while. The staff banter, delicious home-made cakes and incredible coffee kept me going. Thank you Nat and all the staff for looking after me.

I am delighted to share that I've teamed up with the incredible folk at The Haven Cafe for a fund raising afternoon filled with tea, coffee and cake, to raise funds for Breast Friends and Family.

I wanted to show my appreciation for all the help, support and advice they provide. Everything for those with/who've had breast cancer from fitness advice to dietary information to relaxation techniques and much more, their speakers, staff and volunteers are incredible.

FYI - The Haven Cafe, 9 Anchorfield, Newhaven, Edinburgh, EH6 4JG is opposite the Newhaven tram stop and on bus routes too. It is painted pale green and has a colourful mural on one outside wall.

Suggested donation of £10 per person 🙂.
