Story
This year I shall be volunteering again at the Cancer Wellbeing fair and I will be raising money to help towards this worthwhile cause. Therapists, entertainers, hairdressers and nail technicians come together to volunteer for a pamper day to spoil cancer patients at an annual Cancer and Wellbeing event. I myself own my own skin care clinic but volunteered to perform one of the activities that people can choose from which was a hand and arm massage treatment. I spoke with lots of wonderful people who were either going through treatment, were in recovery, or they were part of their close support network.
There are normally around 300 patients that attend and they're treated to entertainment, massages, haircuts, makeovers, pedicures, reiki and yoga sessions.
Jenny Donovan, Cancer Services Manager, said: "The Cancer Wellbeing fair acts as a real opportunity to offer added wellbeing support to our patients living with and beyond a cancer diagnosis. It allows us to bring wellbeing support groups together from across the local area to contribute to more than worthwhile cause”
My father, close family members, and friends have either been through treatment themselves or have seen how Cancer can change their lives in some way. I loved how this event brought people together and they were able to chat with people who were going through the same experience as themselves, whether that be about their treatment or about something else entirely.
The event will be taking place at The Hawthorns, the West Bromwich Albion ground, on Saturday 5th July, and to help towards their fundraising for the event I have decided to do 2 10k running events. I am not the best runner and the most I have done at a previous event has been 5 miles, but to push myself I have signed up to do 10K in May at the Great Birmingham run (on my birthday) and 10k In June at Carsington Water Ashbourne.
Wish me luck!
Even the smallest donation would be gratefully accepted.
It really is a wonderful day to be involved in, so if you are a therapist, entertainer, hairdresser or nail technician and would like to volunteer and have insurance to perform these treatments please contact Jenny Donovan on 0121 507 2776 or email jennifer.donovan@nhs.net.
