Peak District Ultra Challenge 2024 · 6 July 2024 to 7 July 2024 ·
In July I will be lacing up the hiking boots for a long hike across the Peak District in aid of Prostate Cancer UK with three other wonderful people: Liam, Jade & Davie.
Starting at basecamp in Bakewell, we will spend two whole days hiking over 100 kilometres (62 miles!) with 2150 metres elevation gain. Even though I'm no stranger to hiking, the longest distance I have covered is 43 kilometres over 4 days during the Inca Trail Trek. This time I will be covering more than double the distance in half the time!
Even though we all already enjoy hiking, this is an extreme challenge for all of us! However, our hiking journey will start much sooner as we begin to train for the event over the coming months.
Fundraising for a cancer research charity is something that is very important to us. In 2011 at a young age of 23, my other half Liam was diagnosed with cancer. Over the next 9 months, Liam would undergo 2 major life-saving operations and intensive chemotherapy. Without the quick action of the medical professionals, the services of the NHS and the invaluable research funded by charities such as Prostate Cancer UK, Liam would not have been here today.
More than 52,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer every year on average – that's 144 men every day. Every 45 minutes one man dies from prostate cancer – that's more than 12,000 men every year. 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime. - Prostate Cancer UK
