Story
We are supporting children and young people. Scotland is facing a complex mental health crisis. According to Scottish Action for Mental Health (SAMH), 3 pupils in every secondary school class have experienced a mental health problem in some capacity, these issues commonly begin between the ages of 14 and 16. Suicide was the leading cause of death for children and young adults aged 14 to 24 from 2011 to 2022. It's a shocking statistic.
At the Jasmine foundation we focus on three areas:
Community - bringing people together to help. For the last 4 years we have sponsored events for children, young people and adults at the Edinburgh International Book Festival (EIBF). We have been working collaboratively with other charities in this sector and are always keen to support pilot initiatives which we believe are important for communities such as 'The Haven' in Tranent, a mental health hub for children and families.
Education - we believe it's important to raise awareness about emotional literacy. Sarah is currently researching a programme and toolkit for social and emotional learning in schools.
Creativity - we believe creativity can be a catalyst. We have pledged to support a creativity project with EIBF and CAMHS. We have provided thousands of origami sheets to the Resilience Rucksack Project supported by Reading University. Creativity shuts down anxiety. Dr Stella Chan founder of the project has said,
"Very many thanks for your generous support - the Origami Sheets have been very well received by pupils and teachers; they are such an artistic memo for the importance of looking after our mental health. Thank you."
We are passionate about grassroots early intervention and with this concert we will be supporting SAMH's
"A Place for Everyone" campaign to open mental health hubs across Scotland. These will be community bases staffed by knowledgeable skilled and compassionate staff to enable supportive conversations and peer support in non clinical spaces. The first in Glasgow is due to open in September 2025.
