Extraordinary Edinburgh: A Journey in Memory of Simon Flynn
When I first took on this challenge, I wasn’t sure I could do it. The pressure of not wanting to let anyone down weighed heavily on me. Nevertheless surrounded by the stunning landscapes of Edinburgh and supported by so many wonderful people, I can proudly say I’ve completed this challenge—in memory of my cousin, Simon Flynn.
Simon was an inspirational teacher who lived and worked in Gloucestershire. He was 42 when he tragically lost his life in a freak accident. His sudden passing left a huge hole in the hearts of everyone who knew and loved him. Simon’s passion for teaching was unparalleled, and he believed deeply in giving every child the opportunity to become a confident, resilient, and enthusiastic learner.
The challenge itself was a journey I’ll never forget. The kindness and support from everyone along the way kept me going. The Scottish accents shouting “GO Sarah!” and the sweeties from supporters were such a boost. The beauty of the sea and countryside as I watched nature unfold was breathtaking, but the real challenge came in the final miles. The last 6 miles were tough, especially with copious amounts of hail and wind that made it feel like I was going backward! But it was Mile 24 that really got to me—I couldn’t help but shed tears. The last mile, though hard, was made easier by thinking about the school mile that TBS does every week. The end was epic with emotions of disbelief, but pride.
This journey has only made me reflect and strengthen my determination to continue Simon’s legacy and to help others along the way.
Thank you so much for your support. Your generosity means the world to me, and to the children whose lives are touched by Simon’s legacy.
