Story

🏃‍♀️ Why I’m Running the London Marathon for Safe Families UK

Running the London Marathon has become more than a personal challenge for me—it’s an opportunity to shine a light on something incredibly close to my heart: ensuring every child has a safe, loving home and that no family feels alone.

💙 Where My Journey Began

When I was 18, I first learned about the realities of fostering and adoption, and it stirred something in me that has never gone away. I read the statistics about children in care and realised that none of us choose the circumstances we are born into. Every child deserve safety, stability, and love—and I knew I wanted to play a part in making that happen.

Around that time, I discovered Home for Good and their mission to ensure every child who needs one finds a loving home. Their vision fuelled my passion and shaped the path my husband and I would take together.

👨‍👩‍👧 Becoming Foster Carers and Adopters

As I am sure many of you reading this will already know, in 2020 we were approved as foster carers with our local authority. Today, we have two wonderful foster children, and through our journey we have seen more clearly than ever the deep need for the work of Home for Good and Safe Families.

😂 A First-Time Marathoner… What Could Possibly Go Wrong?

Running a Marathon is something which has always been on my bucket list, but the thought of all the training has meant I was quite happy with it staying on there!

Having seen a few friends run marathons over the years, it regularly brings a tear to my eye seeing people cross the finish line after months of dedicated hard work.

When the opportunity to apply to run the 2026 London Marathon for Safe Families UK arose, I very sheepishly applied. I wanted to run, and to do so in support of a charity I value, and support meant it felt like the right thing to do. However, to say I was surprised to hear my application was successful is a massive understatement!

Here we are though, several weeks in already to my marathon training plan. The countdown to 26th April 2026 firmly started. I am doing my very best to resist the urges to stay in the warm and dry rather than go out and put those important miles in!

However, I am incredibly motivated to give it my all to support and raise important funds for Safe Families for Children UK, the charity which includes both Safe Families and Home for Good. I have included below a bit about what these organisations do and hopefully you can see why I am so keen to be involved!

🌟 Why Safe Families UK Matters

Safe Families and Home for Good share a powerful hope:

A society where no family feels alone, and every child has a home where they can flourish.

Safe Families trains and supports local volunteers who draw alongside isolated or overwhelmed families—offering friendship, practical help, and hope. Their early support prevents many children from entering care by giving families the community they need.

But when children do need to enter the care system, Home for Good works to ensure there are enough safe, nurturing homes ready to welcome them. They raise awareness of the needs of children and young people in care, inspire individuals to explore fostering and adoption, and equip churches and communities to offer understanding and support.

Both organisations partner with local churches and communities to bring real, lasting change.
