Sarah Smith is raising money for Sepsis Research FEAT
In memory of Tim Smith

Edinburgh Marathon 2026 · 24 May 2026 ·

Sepsis is a life-threatening condition caused by the body overreacting to infection. It kills around 50,000 people in the UK each year. Sepsis Research FEAT aims to save lives & improve outcomes in sepsis patients through world leading research and awareness raising. Together we can #stopsepsisnow.

Story

On Sunday 24th May 2026, I’ll be running the Edinburgh Marathon in memory of my amazing husband, Tim, whom we sadly lost to Sepsis in October 2023 after a very short illness.

It’s hard to believe that it will have been 16 years since I last ran this marathon back in 2010, a day when Tim and my mother-in-law stood at the sidelines cheering me on. Tim was my biggest supporter, always there at the finish line, no matter where in the country I ran.

This time, things will be different. Tim won’t be waiting for me at the end, but I know he’ll be watching over me from above. I’ll be running this one for him, to make him proud and to push my body around the course one more time in his honour.

To celebrate Tim’s life and raise awareness of the condition that took him far too soon, I’m supporting Sepsis Research FEAT, the UK’s only charity dedicated to sepsis research. Your donations will help fund vital research and save lives through greater understanding, awareness, and treatment of this devastating illness.

Sepsis Research FEAT is a registered charity (SC049399) and we are the UK’s only sepsis research charity.

Sepsis accounts for around 50,000 deaths in the UK every year - that's more than breast and bowel cancer combined.

We don't understand enough about sepsis and the biological processes that can lead to serious illness or even death. That is why we urgently need to increase funding:

- to raise awareness of sepsis

- for research: to understand the processes that lead to sepsis, to design effective treatments for it & to help save lives.
